  • Abstract Government transportation infrastructure and local development policies have gradually shifted from a traditional engineering-oriented approach toward greater emphasis on public space quality, local characteristics, and sustainable development. As a result, railway stations are no longer merely transportation facilities but have become important spatial nodes connecting transportation, tourism, culture, everyday life, and local development. Railway stations in the Hualien region have undergone different stages of construction and redevelopment, resulting in changes in their architectural forms, spatial functions, environmental landscapes, and local identities. This study aims to explore the development process of spatial transformation in railway stations in the Hualien region, analyze the relationship between transportation infrastructure and local spatial development, and further examine the impacts of station spatial transformation on local culture, environmental landscapes, and place identity.
This study employs literature analysis, case study, and field investigation methods, focusing on 18 railway stations in the Hualien region as the overall research scope. Through the analysis of documentary materials, historical photographs, images before and after station redevelopment, field observations, and environmental landscape surveys, the study examines the trends of spatial transformation in railway stations. Three stations¡XXincheng (Taroko) Station, Zhixue Station, and Fuli Station¡Xare selected as the primary case studies. The research adopts Henri Lefebvre¡¦s theory of the production of space as its core theoretical framework and analyzes station spatial transformation from three dimensions: ¡§spatial practice,¡¨
    iii
¡§representations of space,¡¨ and ¡§representational spaces.¡¨ These dimensions are used to examine government planning, users¡¦ spatial behaviors, and local identity. In addition, the study incorporates the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the concept of ¡§aesthetics of mobility¡¨ to conduct a comprehensive analysis of railway station spatial transformation.
The research findings indicate that, following redevelopment, railway stations in the Hualien region have generally evolved toward modernization, functional integration, and the enhancement of landscape identity. However, individual stations continue to exhibit distinct local spatial characteristics. Xincheng (Taroko) Station emphasizes its image as a gateway for tourism, yet a gap remains between official planning and local identity. Zhixue Station reflects the characteristics of a university town and rural settlement, while Fuli Station integrates agricultural production, rice-growing culture, and the landscape of the East Rift Valley. Overall, the spatial transformation of railway stations is not merely a process of architectural renewal, but also a process of spatial production shaped by the interaction of government policies, planning strategies, local industries, residents¡¦ everyday lives, and cultural identity. Future station development should strengthen the integration of transportation, landscape, culture, and local everyday life, enabling railway stations to function as public spatial nodes that embody local memories, cultural meanings, and sustainable values.
