Abstract | This study analyzed the effect of changes in air velocity due to a throttle valvewith a tapered section on the horsepower, shaft torque, fuel consumption and exhaust emission of a gasoline engine. In the experiment, theintake system of a Toyota Altis 1.8 gasoline engine was installed with a throttle value of tapered section design, thus changing the air velocity of the inlet manifold. The subsequent impact on shaft torque (Nm) and brake horsepower (BHP) was measured by a chassis dynamometer. The fuel consumption ratio (BSFC) under constant rotational speed was determined using fuel analysis instruments, while the changes in percentages of carbon monoxide (CO%) and carbon dioxide (CO2%) as well as concentration of hydrocarbons (HC PPM) were detected using an exhaust gas analyzer. Experimental results show that the throttle valveof tapered section design reduced the size of the air inlet, resulting in a 6% enhancement in engine power and torque output under low rotational speed. Moreover, significant improvements in CO, HC and NOemissions were also observed with the total HC emitted reduced by 50-60% on average. |
