  • Abstract Abstract
This study examines Tenom Old Town in Sabah, Malaysia, focusing on its historical development, cultural landscape, current spatial conditions, and future spatial reuse strategies. The formation of Tenom Old Town is closely associated with railway development, the coffee industry, the traditional market, and local everyday life. Among these elements, Tenom Railway Station and its surrounding streets form the major historical and spatial core of the old town.
In recent years, changes in transportation patterns, the relocation of commercial activities, and the aging of public spaces have led to several issues, including underused spaces, declining environmental quality, insufficient pedestrian facilities, and the limited expression of local identity. From the perspectives of cultural landscape and spatial reuse, this study re-examines the development value of Tenom Old Town and proposes feasible strategies suitable for local revitalization.
The research methods include literature review, historical data analysis, spatial analysis, semi-structured in-depth interviews, and SWOT analysis. The study first establishes the theoretical basis of cultural landscape, spatial reuse, and urban regeneration. It then analyzes the geographical setting, historical context, railway culture, coffee-related resources, local market activities, and public space conditions of Tenom Old Town. Through interviews with government representatives, business operators, local organizations, and residents, the study identifies local needs and opinions regarding spatial improvement, railway station regeneration, streetscape enhancement, coffee street development, and cultural preservation.
The findings show that the value of Tenom Old Town is not limited to a single historic building, but is composed of an integrated cultural landscape system consisting of the railway station, traditional market, shophouse streets, coffee culture, local markets, and residentsˇ¦ daily life. Future strategies should position Tenom Railway Station as the entrance image and cultural display core of the old town, while improving pedestrian environments, public facilities, coffee-related cultural connections, underused spaces, and community participation mechanisms. These strategies can gradually enhance the environmental quality, local identity, and spatial vitality of Tenom Old Town.
