  • Abstract With the rapid development of an aging society, older adults have become an important segment of the international tourism market. Their travel preferences have gradually shifted from conventional sightseeing toward greater emphasis on natural landscapes, cultural experiences, and physical and psychological well-being. Therefore, this study aims to explore the travel motivations, landscape preferences, landscape perceptions, and travel needs of older adults visiting Jiuzhaigou, China, as well as to analyze the factors influencing their travel experiences. The findings are intended to provide practical references for future senior tourism planning and landscape design.
This study adopted a literature review and semi-structured in-depth interviews as the primary research methods. The participants were older adults who had previously traveled to Jiuzhaigou. Representative photographs of Jiuzhaigou's scenic attractions were used as visual stimuli to facilitate participants' recall of their travel experiences. The interview data were then systematically organized, analyzed, and interpreted based on the interview framework.
The results indicate that the primary travel motivations of older adults visiting China include appreciating natural landscapes, experiencing local culture, achieving physical and mental relaxation, and enhancing social interaction with companions. Among the destinations, natural attractions such as Five Flower Lake, Long Lake, Shuzheng Lakes, and Nuorilang Waterfall were the most favored. Participants generally described the landscapes of Jiuzhaigou as clear, magnificent, tranquil, comfortable, and restorative. In addition, cultural attractions, including Songpan Ancient Town, Tibetan villages, Dujiangyan, the Leshan Giant Buddha, and Mount Emei, also received highly positive evaluations. Furthermore, the study found that age-friendly tourism services, including well-planned transportation, barrier-free facilities, adequate resting areas, medical support, and interpretive services, can effectively enhance travel satisfaction and revisit intention.
In conclusion, Jiuzhaigou offers both outstanding natural scenery and rich cultural resources, effectively meeting older adults' travel needs for leisure, health, slow-paced travel, and in-depth experiences. The findings of this study may serve as valuable references for travel agencies, tourism authorities, and destination management organizations in developing senior-friendly tourism products, improving tourism environments, and enhancing service quality.
