Abstract | The study focused on evaluation of water quality improvement method for highly polluted river section of the Jishui River. The Jishui River Bridge section of Taiwan Provincial Highway 19A has been seriously polluted for many years, which has indirectly caused very poor water quality in the downstream of Jhaigon Bridge. The collection of relevant literatures showed that the upstream tributary Guizigang makes significant contribution to water pollution, and the major pollution source of the Guizigang is the livestock farming wastewater from Baweng dairy farming area. This study thus aimed to compare the benefits of remediation and costs on three different construction methods: on-site treatment (water treatment plant), combined sewage treatment plant and biomass energy center for improvement of water quality in Jishui River. The evaluation results showed that water treatment plant spent lowest costs of construction and operation, however it was vulnerable to large water volume and resulted in worse performance of water interception. During the wet season, the water volume was exceeded the designed inflow of the water, and thus caused secondary pollution made by the biogas residue being washed into receiving water. The combined sewage treatment plant and the biomass energy center were able to directly collect the farming raw wastewater (including cattle solids), which both had high pollution collection efficiency and removal of the odor and pollution problem caused by the biogas residue. At the same time, the treatment fees could be charged to stock farmers and therefore enhanced revenue and balanced the operating costs of the plant. In terms of biomass energy center, the benefits were better than the combined sewage treatment plant for its electricity generation and biogas residue application on nearby yields (ex. Napier grass) that not only helped reduce operating expenditures, but achieved the circular economy in practice. Therefore, as mentioned above, biomass energy center was the best method for Jishui River in the study. |
