  • Abstract The photocatalytic titanium dioxide has been widely applied in the pollution removal and environmental protection field. Recently, the role of titania is getting more and more important due to its water splitting ability to produce hydrogen.
In this work, a pulsed DC power supply was adopted to anodize the pure titanium plate to produce titanium nanotube array. Amplitudes of the negative and positive voltages and time were adjusted to study their influences on the morphologies and dimensions of titanium nanotubes. The surface and morphology of the TiO2 nanotubes were explored by filed emission SEM. The chemical compostions and the crystalline of the nanotubes were analysis by EDS and XRD.
The hardness and adhesion properties of the nanotubes were investigated by a nanoindenter, HRC hardness test and micro hardness tester, respectively.
The Methylene blue degradation test and antibacterial tests were adopted to evaluate the photo catalytic ability of TiO2 nanotubes. The photocurrent density and photo conversion efficiency were also measured using a potentiostat.
It is observed that the amorphous nanotubes structure is found after the anodization of each specimen. The length, wall thickness and inner diameter of nanotubes increase with positive voltage.
The anatase TiO2 phase is found for each specimen after annealing at 450oC for 30 min in open air, which shows no influence on the morphologies and length of the nanotubes. The adhesion properties of annealed TiO2 nanotubes on the pure Ti substrate in better than that of the amorphous one. The length of the TiO2 nanotubes produced using electrolyte stirring process is much longer than that produced without stirring. In addition, higher photocurrent density, higher photo conversion efficiency and better antibacterial and MB degradation abilities are also observed on the much longer TiO2 nanotubes.
