  • Abstract Firefighting and Fire protection is closely related to people's lives. in the early days, defense facilities were needed to ensure the safety of people. In modern society, firefighting and police are needed to maintain public order and public safety. The official buildings of government agencies often represent the authoritarian power and a kind of spatial image of the restraining force. Based on the lack of complete historical research on fire department buildings in the past, this paper attempts to analyze the current regime's concepts of urban space construction in different historical periods, as well as the location selection of police and fire department offices, the transformation of spatial configuration and architectural style.
Furthermore, this paper uses literature analysis and case study methods to sort out early firefighting organizations and modern police and firefighting systems; on the other hand, it studies the evolution of the corresponding spatial morphology of fire department buildings. This includes the Qing Dynasty city wall, the Taiwan Watchtower; the branch office building, fire station, branch office and modern fire brigade buildings from the Japanese colonial period.
The research results show that the transformation of the entire spatial pattern is from Taiwan's simple defensive watchtower, which transformed from a colonial contract building during the Japanese colonial period into a modern and diverse fire department building.
