Title | A research on the dilemma of Foreign Rare Language Tour Guide to work in Taiwan: Study of Malay-speaking tour guide | ||
Keyword | |||
Abstract | Tourism industry is a important source of economy for Taiwan. In recent years, the government has made great efforts to attract tourists from Southeast Asia to travel to Taiwan. Tour guides are considered an important part of the tourism industry, the government has added a tour guide license exam in Southeast Asian languages (rare languages), to encourage foreign students and new immigrants in Taiwan to take the examination. This would help address the issue of a lack of tour guides in rare languages. However, most tour guides in Taiwan work on a freelance basis and are not employed full-time by travel agencies. If foreign students after graduation and just looking for a job as a "tour guide" in Taiwan, it will not be easy to find an employer (travel agency) to apply for a work permit. It is not easy for foreign students or new immigrants to enter the tour guide industry after obtaining the certificate. This study uses qualitative interviews, with Malay-speaking tour guides as the main research subjects. Four Malaysians holding Malay-language tour guide licenses (two foreign graduates and two foreign spouses) and one person engaged in promoting Muslim tourism in Taiwan were invited to participate in the interviews. Finally, through this research, we sort out that foreign spouses prefer full-time jobs with stable income and are not willing to work as tour guides. On the contrary, foreign students are interested in becoming tour guides, but they give up working as tour guides because it is difficult to apply for legal work permits when taking on freelance work. Therefore, this study makes several suggestions. First, provide freelance work permits for foreign tour guides. Second, suggest to develop an internship program that is not limited to a single organization, so that students who have obtained a tour guide license to have the opportunity to learn to lead tours from senior tour guides. Third, the overall convenience of Muslim tourism needs to be greatly improved. For businesses that have obtained Muslim certification, must comply with Muslim norms and pay attention to quality in order to effectively make long-term profits in the Muslim market. It is hoped that through this study, the government and relevant units be more aware of the dilemma of foreign tour guides and the current situation of Muslim tourism, and provide specific suggestions for consideration in the implementation of relevant policies in the future. |
