  • Abstract Magneto-rheological(MR) fluid is a kind of new novel smart material. MR fluid is composed of based fluid, magnetic micro-particles and surfactant. When an external magnetic field is applied, the MR fluid changes from Newtonian fluid into Bingham plastic in few milliseconds continuously, rapidly, reversibly, and is controlled easily. The MR fluid clutch utilizes the MR effect to control the torque transmission.
    The MRF clutch is designed, and the shear stress between the transmitted plates is predicted using the magnetic flux density distribution evaluated from Magneto software. The transmitted torque of the MRF clutch is derived by using the Bingham plastic constitutive mode. An experiment is built up, and MR fluid uses MRF-132DG made by LORD company. The transmitted torque is recorded for different velocity and applied currents to LabVIEW software. The experimental results are compared with the theoretical values. It is demonstrated that the MRF clutch is a good device of transmitted torque.
