| Title | A Study on the Relationship Between Firefighters' Physical Fitness Test Performance and Self- Contained Breathing Apparatus Air Consumption | ||
| Keyword | |||
| Abstract | Firefighters are required to possess not only professional firefighting skills but also adequate physical fitness and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) operational abilities in order to effectively perform rescue tasks under conditions of high temperature, dense smoke, oxygen deficiency, and heavy physical workload. In recent years, the National Fire Agency of Taiwan has implemented a new physical fitness assessment system that evaluates firefighters based on five major fitness components, including power, agility, maximal strength, muscular endurance, and cardiorespiratory endurance. However, the relationship between firefightersˇ¦ physical fitness performance and SCBA operational performance remains worthy of further investigation. This study selected firefighters from seven fire stations under the Second Emergency and Rescue Corps of the Taipei City Fire Department, including Anhe, Jinhua, Xinyi, Zhuangjing, Nangang, Chengde, and Jiuzhuang Fire Stations, as research participants. Data from the New Physical Fitness Test and SCBA Operation Test conducted between 2023 and 2025 were collected and analyzed using the Cross-Comparison Method. The study compared physical fitness scores, 1,500-meter run performance, hex-bar deadlift and loaded carry performance, as well as SCBA operation time, air consumption, and Did Not Finish (DNF) records among different fire stations. The results revealed significant differences in both physical fitness and SCBA operational performance among the fire stations. Xinyi, Zhuangjing, and Jinhua Fire Stations demonstrated superior performance in both fitness tests and SCBA operation tests, whereas Chengde, Nangang, and Jiuzhuang Fire Stations showed relatively weaker performance. The cross-comparison results indicated that firefighters with better physical fitness generally achieved shorter SCBA operation times and lower air consumption. Furthermore, the 1,500-meter run performance exhibited a consistent trend with air consumption, suggesting that better cardiorespiratory endurance contributes to higher air-use efficiency. Likewise, firefighters with better hex-bar deadlift and loaded carry performance tended to complete SCBA tasks in shorter times, indicating that muscular strength positively influences operational efficiency. In conclusion, the findings demonstrate a considerable relationship between firefightersˇ¦ physical fitness and SCBA operational performance, particularly regarding cardiorespiratory endurance and maximal strength. It is recommended that fire departments continue strengthening both physical fitness and SCBA training programs while establishing long-term monitoring mechanisms to improve operational effectiveness and firefighter safety. The results of this study may serve as a reference for future physical training programs and SCBA training policies within fire service organizations. |
