Power factor correction (PFC) is always used to improve the power quality in power converter by reducing reative power and harmonic distortion between converter and power utility. PFC is widely implemented by passive or active configuration. In reality, passive PFC formed by discrete RLC always dissipates more power loss in energy conversion. Adversely, active PFC can provide less current harmonics and high power efficiency with close unity power factor. Generally, in active PFC, there are two kinds of conduction modes in real application, i.e. discontinuous (DCM) and continuous modes (CCM). In this paper, the realization study of PFC with CCM is conducted including analysis, design consideration, and realization. A design example of 300W PFC CCM is examined for verifying the predicted performance. The experimental result shows well behavior with close to unity power factor, high power efficiency up to 90%. |
