Title | The Direct Shearing Strength of Unsaturated Soil under adsorption condition | ||
Keyword | |||
Abstract | This research uses conventional direct shear apparatus for proceeding direct shear test of unsaturated soil and for determining the relation between the degree of saturation and the shear strength under adsorption condition. The shear strength parameters comparison between unsaturated soil and saturated soil can understand the shear behavior to relate to saturated state of soil. In general, conventional triaxial and direct shear apparatuses require modifications prior to their use for unsaturated soils. The modifications must accommodate the independent measurement or control of the pore-air and pore-water pressures. Air pressure and back-water pressure systems can control the degree of saturation and measure matric suction of unsaturated soils. Limited expenses cause not to modify apparatuses in this research. but this research still uses constant temperature oven to control water content of soil up to anticipant conditions. Then the sample of unsaturated soil is proceeded direct shear tests. The results obtained in this study show that angle of undrained friction is equal to 44.49 o and the undrained cohesion is equal to 47.66kPa when the degree of saturation is in the range of 88.3% to 93.2%. In addition, the angle of undrained friction is equal to 51.27 o and the undrained cohesion is equal to 42.55kPa when the volumetric water content is in the range of 28.30% to 28.67%. |
