  • Abstract This paper tries to study the improvement of adding clay into diaphragm wall construction in gravel layer. The suitability of this improvement method for preventing collapse of furrow excavations is verified by comparison with a field case in Xindian.
Before improvement of adding clay, the soil layer is disturbed just in two sides of excavated male panel; the situation of collapse is less serious. However, the soil layer is disturbed in four sides of excavated female panel; the situation of collapse is considered more serious.
After improvement of adding clay, the benefit evaluation is the difference the actual concrete quantities consumed and the design concrete quantities in the diaphragm walls. The data in jobsite investigation shows that not only the female and male panels can be more effective in preventing collapse, but it can also control and minimize the difference between the actual concrete quantities consumption and the design concrete quantities to below 25%.
