  • Abstract In this study, composite processing of carbon steel SS400 is conducted using magnetorheological fluid, which serves as the tool for plane polishing and whose viscosity is changed by an electric coil. The effects of various parameters including current, rotational speed of spindle, polishing time and axial loading on surface roughness and material removal rate are measured to determine the optimal machining conditions.
Experimental results show that the optimal machining conditions are current, 1.4 A (magnetic flux 7.8 mT); rotational speed of spindle, 2130 rpm; polishing time, 12 min, and axial loading, 1.832 kg. Under such machining conditions, the material removal rate reached the maximum of 33.5 mg/min, and surface roughness can be reduced from the original 1.748 µm to 0.041 µm, showing mirror surface quality.
