Abstract | Abstract At present, there are two long roadway tunnels in Taiwan¸ specifically the Hsuehshan Tunnel and the Baguashan Tunnel. In order to protect the users of the tunnels mentioned above, the prevention of and relief from possible hazards in tunnels have always been in heavy debate among the government and experts of the field in our country. Execution of any relief work has generally fallen upon local fire departments neighboring the long roadway tunnels. Fire departments are no stranger to the mitigation of fire hazard, however, doing the same in long roadway tunnels is certainly a challenge that has yet to be encountered. To this effect, this paper intends to collect any data regarding the mitigation of fire hazards in long roadway tunnels and the experience of any personnel involved in the execution or training of dealing with tunnel hazard relief. With regard to the unique features of fire hazards in tunnels, this research will delegate fire hazard relief strategies into three main categories: relief operation procedures in the event of a fire hazard; equipment used for fire hazards, including, vehicles; and fire mitigation tactics. Hopefully this paper can provide insight and offer better strategies for fire department personnel in the event of a fire hazard in a long roadway tunnel. |
