  • Abstract During the period of 1988-2007, 113 typhoon cases were selected in the study for Power Dissipation Index (PDI), average accumulated rainfall (RF) and agricultural losses calculations. The average PDI and RF values were in the range of 1.008¡ã3.151 ¡Ñ 1010 m3s-2 and 94.8¡ã172.2 mm, respectively. The average total agricultural loss was 1,238 million (NTD). Damage related to Typhoon Herb caused the maximum agricultural loss, which led to 14,779 million (NTD). The RF over Eastern Taiwan was averagely larger than those in other areas. On the other hand, the agricultural loss over Central Taiwan was largest among different areas.
The regression results revealed that agricultural losses are highly dependent on either PDI or RF during the period of Typhoon warning over land. Further more, RF was slightly more related to the loss comparing with PDI, which means large amount of accumulated rainfall might cause more damage on agriculture than strong wind speed. Either rainfall or wind speed during the period of Typhoon warning over land (the ocean) were highly related to the damage in rice and banana (vegetable). Large amount of rainfall caused more damage to the vegetable and rice than strong wind speed. However, rainfall and wind may both result in damage to banana.
