Title | Repair of Damaged Pot Bearings of Steel Arch Bridge ¡V A Case Study on Repair of Sheliao Bridge | ||
Keyword | |||
Abstract | Amid rapid urbanization in Taiwan, roads and bridges become increasingly important for connections between cities. Not all structural components of bridges are permanent components, such as deck expansion installation and pot bearing. Such components are subject to wear and tear as time and frequency of traffic. This study focused on the damage and replacement of pot bearings. Pot bearings are extremely significant components which are installed beneath the bridge girder and pass the load from bridge to foundations. This study, by referring to some cases about pulling or repairing damaged pot bearings on other bridges in Taiwan over recent years, discussed the success case of repairing damaged pot bearings on a bridge under construction in Keelung City. In the study case, subject to limited budget and time, the design and construction teams adopted the pull-back method first, but they failed because the actual bearing capacity of soil on site is less than the expected. Then, they proposed the incremental launching method to push against the end plate. At last, the bridge was pushed back to the original position and the repair was complete. Two construction methods were adopted in the repair process, but the cost was just NT$1.64 million more than the previous construction cost NT$10.20 million. The repair methods can provide a reference to future pot bearing support project. |
