  • Abstract In Taiwan, while the frequency of fire incidents has shown a gradual decline over the years, the number of casualties resulting from such events has not decreased accordingly. In many severe fire cases, it is often observed that individuals make incorrect decisions at the moment of the incident, placing themselves in greater danger. This suggests a persistent deficiency in the public's concepts and knowledge of fire prevention. Therefore, this study advocates that comprehensive fire safety education can effectively enhance public understanding of fire prevention and enable the application of such knowledge in daily life. With appropriate education, individuals can proactively engage in fire prevention efforts¡Xsuch as identifying potential fire hazards at home and installing safety equipment¡Xbefore a disaster occurs, and employ correct response strategies to ensure their safety during a fire emergency.
To examine the relationship between fire safety education and the improvement of public fire prevention concepts, this study employed a questionnaire-based approach. The survey covered demographic information, willingness to participate in fire safety courses, and a fire prevention knowledge assessment, targeting residents of New Taipei City. A total of 885 responses were collected, with 58 deemed invalid, resulting in 827 valid responses for analysis.
The findings reveal that individuals who participate in fire safety courses annually or have attended such courses more frequently in the past demonstrate significantly higher levels of fire prevention knowledge compared to those with little or no participation. Regarding the public¡¦s willingness to learn about fire prevention, respondents placed the greatest emphasis on the instructor¡¦s experience under the category of instructor traits, and on the credibility of course materials under the category of teaching materials.
