  • Abstract Abstract
Sixty five years of age or older due to physical aging and visual deterioration , refractive errors and other phenomena , the visual performance of reading low performance , low vision students in their reading performance also have similar performance. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that the reading performance of the elderly is related to the changes in the values of text size and reading distance and the association with low vision students.
The experiment used nine sizes of Critical Print Size (CPS) to test reading conditions of the elderly over the age of 65 and simulated low-acuity students' performance data on readings as the font size changed, used to infer distance and font Reading performance of low vision students' reading speed and critical word size.
The results of this study are shown below:
    A. The data from 20 elderly people over 65 years old in Taiwan show that, in line with the conclusion of Oshibumi Kakizawa and Shigeyoshi Aokib (2005), TYPE1: Subjects always maintain a similar reading distance regardless of the size of the text. TYPE2 : The subject's reading distance will vary significantly with the size of the text , the smaller the text look closer ; the larger the text , the farther the reading distance.
    B. The CPS measured at a fixed distance (40 cm) is smaller than the CPS measured at a fixed distance, consistent with the literature (Huang, 2017).
    C. In subjects with similar visual acuity values, average reading distance (AVG) is quite different, indicating that in addition to visual acuity factors, there are other factors that affect the performance of reading distance.
    D. The experimenter observed in the experiment, when people read, even if the same size of the text, the reading distance will change.
