| Title | The Influence of the New Shift System Reform on Leisure and Quality of Life among Firefighters | ||
| Keyword | |||
| Abstract | Abstract Firefighters operate in high-risk and high-stress environments where the shift system plays a pivotal role in determining their physical and mental well-being as well as work-life balance. As the shift system for firefighters in Taiwan transitions from the old model (e.g., 24 hours on/24 hours off or 48 hours on/24 hours off) to the new model (e.g., 48 hours on/48 hours off), understanding the substantive impact of this reform becomes essential. This study aims to investigate the differences and correlations regarding leisure participation, leisure constraints, leisure satisfaction, and quality of life (QoL) among firefighters before and after this systemic reform. Adopting a quantitative research approach, this study surveyed active field firefighters who have experienced the transition between both shift systems. A total of 300 valid questionnaires were collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired sample t-tests, and regression analysis. The major findings are as follows: (1) The new shift system yielded significantly higher scores in overall leisure participation frequency, leisure satisfaction, and all four domains of QoL (physical, psychological, social, and environmental) compared to the old system, while significantly reducing various leisure constraints. (2) Under the old system, leisure constraints¡Xparticularly structural and interpersonal constraints¡Xsignificantly and negatively affected leisure participation. However, under the new system, the predictive power of these constraints diminished or disappeared. This suggests that the new system facilitates "leisure empowerment," allowing participation to be driven by intrinsic motivation rather than limited by time deficits or fatigue. (3) Among leisure activities, "social interaction" and "outdoor recreation" were identified as the most significant positive predictors for enhancing psychological satisfaction and overall QoL. The study concludes that the shift system reform provides significant structural benefits that effectively alleviate leisure constraints and improve the well-being of firefighters. Therefore, it is recommended that authorities ensure sufficient manpower to maintain the stability of the new system. Furthermore, firefighters are encouraged to utilize the consecutive days off provided by the new system to engage in restorative social and outdoor leisure activities, thereby fostering a positive cycle of physical and mental health and work efficiency. |
