  • Abstract The purpose of this study is to assess the environmental impact of tourism event. The Rubber Duck exhibition in Kaohsiung not only increased economic benefits, but also caused many environmental impacts. Before the exhibition, a lot amount of PVC was used to make the Rubber Duck, however, PVC is harmful to environment. During the exhibition, according to our assumption, 6,700 tons of CO2 was released from the traffic. 250,000 tons of water was used and 200,000 tons of wastewater was produced. In addition, 1053 tons of garbage was produced from the traveler. After the exhibition, a good plan is needed to treat the Rubber Duck, avoiding the pollution of the environment.
In our opinion, alternatives should be considered to reduce the environmental impact. For example, use environmental friendly material to make the Rubber Duck instead of PVC. A traffic plan was needed to reduce air pollution, such as encourage traveler to use public traffic system. A water resource plan is also needed to avoid affecting local residents. A garbage reduce plan must be considered to protect the environment of the exhibition area. Finally, a plan for the Rubber Duck disposal must be proposed for our environment. How to balance the tourism and environment protection will be an important issue for sustainable tourism. In this study, alternatives were proposed for consideration.
