| Title | Crossing Institutional and Cultural Boundaries:An Analysis of Economic Adaptation and Social Participation among Chinese Spouses in Taiwan | ||
| Keyword | |||
| Abstract | This study investigates the economic adaptation and social participation of Chinese spouses (commonly known as ˇ§Mainland spousesˇ¨) in Taiwan, focusing on the challenges and strategies they employ while navigating institutional and cultural boundaries. Since the 1990s, transnational marriages have significantly increased in Taiwan, with Chinese spouses constituting the largest group. However, their participation in economic and social life is often constrained by legal restrictions, social stigmas, and intersecting gender roles. Using qualitative research methods, this study draws on in-depth interviews with 15 Chinese spouses who have lived in Taiwan for more than five years, supplemented by interviews with NGO workers and local government officials. The findings reveal that structural barriersˇXsuch as limited employment options and difficulties in obtaining legal status and social welfare are common. Nevertheless,the participants demonstrated remarkable agency by relying on familial support, self-learning, and community networks to gradually integrate into Taiwanese society. In terms of social participation, while initial involvement was often passive, many women emerged as cultural mediators through motherhood, volunteer work, and religious engagement. The study recommends policy reforms aimed at reducing institutional exclusion,dismantling social discrimination, and enhancing local support systems to foster fuller inclusion and identity construction for Chinese spouses. It also contributes to the broader literature on migrant women and multicultural integration. |
